Distance Education: Is a Virtual Classroom for You Part 2

Distance Education: Is a Virtual Classroom for You

Part 2

Positive aspects of distance education

·       Independence and time management: taking courses online lets you hone your ability to work on your own. You also gain experience in managing your time efficiently.

·       A flexible schedule: school can only provide a certain number of class periods in a single school day, and there may not be enough time for you to take everything you want. Because distance education lets you take classes outside regular school hours, it gives you the flexibility to explore all your areas of interest.

·       Advanced and specialized classes: some school can’t provide advanced and specialized classes. Distance education gives you the chance to gain experience in areas that would otherwise remain out of reach.

Gold medal-winning race walker Alex Schwazer was the first walker to come in at the London Olympics after 3 hours and 39 minutes. Shortly after that he was found using drugs to make him run faster, he was doping his blood. When the authorities found out he was banned from the Olympics and he was proud of it because he said that without getting caught he would have still been using drugs.

Reflection:  I think it’s dumb how Alex used drugs for the Olympics and how he wasn’t even ashamed of it when he was caught. Alex should have just worked on his own to win the gold medals instead of breaking the rules and becoming a cheater. Cheating will only bring negative consequences just like hoe Alex was caught and was banned form the Olympics. Even if he says he’s proud of it eventually he will realize what a bad decision he made and now that burden will be him forever.

You may want to take a class that your high school doesn’t offer. Under some circumstances, you can still enroll in the class----through distance learning.

Distance education means taking a class without being physically present where it is being taught. Internet-base technology lets students almost anywhere.

Some high schools agree to recognize distance-learning credits when they don’t have the resources to offer a course themselves. Distance education is often used to increase options in rural areas and for AP courses.

For you, it might mean doing self-tutorial at home in the evening, or participating in the class that is 1,000 miles away, along with other high school student. Check with your school counselor to see what’s available.

“You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.”

-Rosa Parks

Reflection: I agree with what Rosa Parks has quoted.  There is no need to be fearful or doubtful when you know you are making the right decision at the right time. I think what Rosa Parks said is very sensible because she did the right thing in the bus when she knew she had to have the same equal rights as everyone else. I think Rosa’s response to the world did a huge impact on the world and I think people should stop and think about what she said for a moment and realize how just one person can impact a lot of people’s lives.

Additional Tips

Although working and going to school is challenging, it can be a rewarding experience if you use some foresight. These tips can help you handle the situation and make the most of your time:

·       Discuss your plans with your family. Balancing the demands of school and work is easier with their support.

·       Start slowly; don’t commit to working a lot of hours immediately.

·       Avoid time conflicts by planning your class and work schedules as far ahead of time as possible.

·       Use your time efficiently.  You use 10 minutes waiting in a line to go over a few pages of assigned reading. If your job has a lot of down time and your boss has no objection, you can use slow periods to do schoolwork.

·       If you commute to your job on public transportation, bring your schoolwork with you so you can work along the way.

Be flexible and willing to make sacrifices. You may have to cut down on some other thing you might like to do because of your school and work commitments.

·       If you have too much on your plate, admit it. Then cut back as needed.

·       Schedule relaxation. Everyone needs some down time to stay happy and healthy

An Olympics medal winner named Marion Jones won 3 gold medals and 2 bronze in the 2000 Olympics, but a few years later she had to give up those medals and go straight into jail for being under the impression of athletic drugs.
Reflection: I think it’s very senseless that Marion Jones would risk her whole life’s work by using drugs. She worked hard to win those medals that not only represent a winner but a hard worker that doesn’t give up. But the fact that she cheated shattered the illusion that she won those medals fairly and exposed to the world that she was a fake the whole time. It’s mindless to think that she can get away with it and not only her but everyone else who makes an idiotic decision.

He reminds students that “the activates and courses students choose wary considerably, so it’s important for young people to keep their individual situation clearly in mind.” MacGowan continues, “for example, student’s actors should allow for the fact that they won’t have such time during performance sessions. Student athletes need to remember the times of the years of the year that they’ll be tried up with games and practice. Other students who are in classes that make considerable demands outside of the classrooms must keep that reality in mind.”
